Snow Piles Up Downwind of Eastern Great Lakes

There is no shortage of winter weather in the Great Lakes to New England as the short holiday work week kicks off. Not to be outdone, a bitter cold blast is reminding eastern residents that winter is just around the corner.

An intensifying low pressure lumbering through eastern Canada continues sending waves of heavy snow across upstate New York, as scattered flurries linger through New England. Cold air funneling across the warm Great Lakes has stirred up impressive lake-effect snow totals downwind of Lake Ontario. 

So far, these lake-effect snow bands have brought six to 40-plus inches of snow, giving snow plows extra work in places across upstate New York, western Massachusetts and Connecticut this holiday week.  Snowfall accumulations have eased across Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, however, will continue through this afternoon across eastern New York. Norfolk, Conn. received nearly 14 inches of snow and Peru, Mass. received 20 inches. Further east, Acton, Maine received 4 inches, Pittsburg, N.H. received 5 inches, and Highland Lakes, N.J. received almost 7 inches of snow.  

However, the Tug Hill region takes the cake with the highest snowfall totals over the last few days from the low pressure system and lake effect snow. Snow bands continue off Lake Ontario today and will bring an additional 3 to 8 inches on top of what has been received. As of Monday evening, Lacona, N.Y. has received a whopping 40 inches of snow, while it's neighbor Redfield has over 36 inches of snow on the ground. Port Byron, N.Y. along Interstate 90 has received 27 inches of snow, while further south along Interstate 81, Binghampton, N.Y. received 23 inches. Snow showers will continue through this afternoon as high pressure nudges into the region.

Today, a slightly milder pattern will emerge in the Great Lakes to the East Coast ahead of the next cold front that will bring rain showers across the region on Wednesday. Instead of Monday's lower 30s, Bradford, Pa., will see upper 30s today and lower 40s Wednesday.
