Tsunami Watch Defined

A Tsunami Watch is issued based on seismic activity -- usually caused by an underwater earthquake -- without confirmation that an actual tsunami is underway. It is issued as an advanced alert to areas that could be impacted by destructive tsunami waves. A watch is updated at least every hour to give the most current conditions of the tsunami.

Residents living in a tsunami watch area should prepare their home and activate emergency preparations.

Additional tips:

  • Follow instructions of local authorities.
  • Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes.
  • Evacuate if and when advised.
  • Avoid low lying coastal areas.
  • If time allows secure unanchored objects around your home.
  • If out in a boat do not bring the boat in to dock, instead keep it in deep water until the tsunami threat has passed.
