Severe Thunderstorm Warning Defined

Exclusive WeatherBug Video about Severe Thunderstorm Warning

A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when either a severe thunderstorm is indicated by radar or a spotter reports a thunderstorm producing 3/4 inch diameter hail or larger and/or 58 mile per hour winds or greater. Warnings are usually issued for a duration of one hour. They can be issued without a Severe Thunderstorm Watch already being in effect.

During the warning, people in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately. Severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes with little or no advanced warning.

Additional tips:

  • Move into a sturdy building
  • If a sturdy building is not available, get inside a car and keep the windows up
  • Get out of boats and away from the water
  • Avoid using the telephone or any electrical appliances
  • Do not take a bath or a shower
