Fire Weather Watch and Red Flag Warning Defined

Exclusive WeatherBug Video on Fire Weather

A Fire Weather Watch is issued when Red Flag conditions -- when areas are very dry and could have sustained winds average 15 mph or greater, relative humidity less than or equal to 25 percent and temperature of greater than 75 degrees F -- are expected within the next 72 hours.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when Red Flag conditions are expected within the next 24 hours.

Residents living in fire-prone areas should listen to the local radio and TV stations for continuous updates. If told to evacuate, do so as soon as possible.

Safety tips:

  • Have evacuation plans with everyone living in the house incase a fire does threaten your home.
