The parched Western U.S. will welcome an abundance of rain as the work week comes to a close. Winter will be very much alive across the Midwest and Mississippi Valley as well.

WeatherBug Meteorologist Addison Greene has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.

Torrential downpours are slamming the Western U.S. today as a Pacific storm slams into the California coast. This much-needed deluge will extend from the West Coast and California to the Intermountain West and even into the northern reaches of the Southwest. Heavy mountain snow will blanket the Sierras and elevated locations of the Intermountain West, adding a few more layers to the still-diminished snowpack. Temperatures will range from the 50s in northern California and the Intermountain West to the 60s and 70s in Southern California and the Southwest.

Winter will keep a firm grasp on the Upper Midwest and Mid-Mississippi Valley on the last day of February. A front moving eastward will bring another round of snow to the Midwest, extending from Michigan`s Upper Peninsula to Iowa. A wintry mix will be in the works for southeast corner of the Mid-Mississippi Valley and the western Tennessee Valley. Temperatures in the Upper Midwest will be in the teens, rising into the 20s and 30s in the Mid-Mississippi Valley. The Tennessee Valley will see highs in the 40s.

Snow will invade the Northern Rockies and Northern Plains as a front stalls over the spine of the Rockies. Bitterly cold temperatures will accompany the bout of snow with highs sinking down to ten degrees below zero across the Northern Plains. Highs in the Northern Rockies will be in the single-digits and teens.

Aside from a few lake-effect snow showers on the eastern side of Lake Ontario, the remainder of the U.S. will see a few rays of sunshine. Temperatures across New England and Mid-Atlantic will sink into the teens and 20s, rising into the 30s and 40s across the Central Plains. The Pacific Northwest will feel highs in the 50s while the Southeast warms up into the 60s and 70s. The Southern Plains will be the hotspot today, with widespread temperatures in the 70s and lower 80s.
