By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier
Today will be a soggy one along the East Coast as a storm moves from the Carolinas into New England. Meanwhile, the Plains will be thrust back into winter as an Arctic outbreak arrives.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Bryan Karrick has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Rain will deluge the East Coast today as plenty of Gulf of Mexico moisture will stream northward. One to two inches of rain will inundate cities such as Raleigh, N.C., New York City and Boston. Farther south, thunderstorms will sweep through Florida along an associated cold front. While most locations will only see wet conditions, cold air sneaking into northern New England will deliver a burst of heavy snow from northern Vermont to Maine. Here, 6 to 10 inches of snow could pile up by Monday morning.
Farther to the west, an arctic outbreak will be well underway on Sunday morning as a cold front will open the door for frigid Canadian air to envelop the Plains. High temperatures may only reach 5 to 15 degrees below zero in the northern Plains, with single digits as far south as Des Moines, Iowa. To make matters even worse, blustery winds in the northern Plains will bring the wind chill values as low as a numbing 45 degrees below zero. Air temperatures will remain below freezing even as far south as Oklahoma City and the Texas Panhandle today.
Elsewhere, dry weather is expected from the lower Mississippi Valley to southern Plains and throughout the western U.S. Only a couple snow showers may affect the northern Rockies.
Temperatures will vary greatly across the U.S. today. Outside of the aforementioned frigid weather in the Plains, temperatures in the 30s will be found in northern New England and much of the Mountain West. Warmer 40s and 50s will stretch from southern New England to the Deep South as well as the Pacific Northwest. California will remain mild as Santa Ana winds deliver comfortable 60s and 70s. Florida will enjoy the warmest weather today, with toasty 70s and 80s widespread.
