Latest on the Plains Tornado Outbreak

A massive, devastating, tornado outbreak continues across the Plains, with a deadly tornado slamming Moore, Okla., this afternoon. Here is some of the latest information on the outbreak and the Moore tornado:

  • Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Watches stretch from Oklahoma to Wisconsin, including Fayetteville, Ark., St. Louis, Chicago and Milwaukee.

  • A tornado ripped through Moore, Okla., just before 3 p.m. CDT. It has been preliminarily rated as an EF-4 tornado, with winds of up to 200 mph.
  • The death toll is confirmed to be 51 people so far. A search is ongoing to find those still missing, and is expected to continue throughout the night and well into Tuesday.
  • Sixteen possible tornadoes have been reported from Texas to Missouri.
  • Softball sized hail has been reported in Bigheart, Okla., with baseball sized hail in Yukon, Okla.
  • Pittsburg, Kan., reported 75 mph winds, knocking down trees. Wapanucka, Okla., recorded an 80 mph gust, as did Eureka Springs, Ark.
  • This is the third day of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes across the Plains. At least 1 person was killed in Shawnee, Okla., on Sunday when a tornado tore through a mobile home park.
