The weather is looking spring-like for the 118th Boston Marathon today! Although this year`s race brings mixed emotions due to the tragic events that unfolded last year, the silver lining is the weather will cooperate for the 26.2-mile stampede from Hopkinton, Mass., to downtown Boston.

The race also coincides with New England`s Patriot Day and the Red Sox are in town for a late-morning home game.

Eight waves of runners will dash from the starting line in Hopkinton, Mass., starting between 8:50 a.m. EDT and 11:25 a.m. EDT. Sunshine will be filtered through mid and high-clouds for the start of the race with temperatures in the 40s. The mid and high-level clouds will scoot across the sky but the weather will remain dry as runners push towards the finish line in Boston from midday into the mid-afternoon.

Temperatures will warm to around 60 degrees at the finish line. These temperatures are right on cue for mid-April in Boston. The average high is 56 degrees and morning low is 41 degrees.

The only drawback with the weather today will be a bit of a headwind in spots for the racers. Southwest winds will increase to about 15 mph but local effects will allow a few gusts between tall buildings to reach 30 mph.

Last year`s race had similar weather to what is expected through this afternoon. Runners had to tough it out in the heat two years ago when Boston set a record high of 87 degrees on race day, April 16, 2012. Nearly 2,000 runners sought medical attention due to the prolific heat. The 1905 Boston Marathon was the hottest on record; the temperature reached 100 degrees. One of the coldest race days was Wednesday, April 19, 1967 when snow squalls were observed.

The marathon is always held on Patriots` Day. This day commemorates the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. It is an official state holiday in Massachusetts, Maine and Wisconsin. The holiday takes place on April`s third Monday.

Another tradition on Patriots` Day is a Boston Red Sox late-morning home game. Just as the runners power through the 26.2-mile course, baseball players will be hitting Fenway Park later this morning to take on the Baltimore Orioles for the 11:05 a.m. EDT start. The weather for the first pitch will be partly cloudy with temperatures in the middle 50s.
