Snow Winding Down Across Northern Plains

A major winter storm that blanketed the Rockies and the greater Denver area with feet of snow Wednesday and Thursday is finally winding down today. However, a bit of snow is still falling across the northern high Plains as the responsible storm system rockets northward.

WeatherBug Meteorologist Rachel Peterson has the latest on the Dakotas and Rockies winter storm in this exclusive WeatherBug Video.

While the heavy snow is fading over the western Plains as the storm finally slides northeast in the Upper Midwest, blowing and drifting snow remains a major problem across eastern Colorado, western Kansas and the Nebraska Panhandle. Wind gusts will cause snow to drift, endangering travel.

The drifting snow will just add to the major travel headaches across Colorado, Wyoming and western Nebraska. Roads remained closed in southeastern Wyoming, eastern Colorado and western Nebraska, including parts of Interstates 70, 76 and 80, as snow drifts across the prairie. As much as 45 inches of snow were measured in Colorado, with parts of Nebraska seeing up to 20 inches.

Otherwise, the bands of snow will continue to spread north and eastward along the area of low pressure marching through the Plains. Up to 6 inches of snow will fall today, particularly across the Red River Valley in North Dakota and Minnesota. Lesser amounts are likely across South Dakota and Nebraska, where Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect.

The snow will move out by tonight, with cold but dry weather on tap for the weekend across the Plains.
