Ice Storm Warning Defined
An Ice Storm Warning is issued when freezing rain produces a significant and possibly damaging accumulation of ice. The criteria for this warning varies from state to state, but typically will be issued any time more than a quarter inch of ice is expected to accumulate in an area.
Ice storms can lead to road closures and widespread power outages. Prepare your home to be as self-sufficient as possible. Have enough food, water, and heating sources to last at least 3 days.
Travel Safety Tips:
- Always obey local law enforcement with regards to road closures.
- If you must travel, drive slowly and increase your following distance to avoid collisions.
- Have a fully supplied winter emergency kit in your vehicle.
- Travel during the day, staying on main roads.
