View History and Hurricanes VideoDear Educator,

We're well into the school year...and hurricane season! History tells us that September and October are the peak months for tropical storms. So you need to be super-vigilent if you live in an area that can be affected by these powerful storms.

When we think of hurricanes, we think of the recent destruction caused by storms like Andrew and Katrina. But weather, and more specifically hurricanes, has literally helped to shape history. Sounds like a good topic for a report – don't you think? WeatherBug Meteorologist Rachel Peterson gets us started with some information on how hurricanes shaped history in this month's RWI video.

And thanks to all the schools that attended the 2009 Hurricane Webinar with Broadcast Meteorologist Steve Prinzivalli. We really enjoyed all the questions from the schools across the U.S. One school asked, "How many students are listening?" At that time, we didn't know. So we did some calculations to figure we totaled more than 5,000 students for both sessions. That's incredible! If you missed the webinar, you can view it here as a Window Media file: 2009 Hurricane Webinar.
