Winter Solstice — January 2009

Dear Educator,

View Rachel's videoI am sure your students have already noticed that the short days of winter are getting longer. Why are the daylight hours starting to increase? WeatherBug Meteorologist Rachel Peterson explains all about Winter Solstice in this month's RWI video lesson.

And while they're learning about the increase of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, you can also start talking sun safety with your students. This year, more than one million Americans will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer—the fastest growing cancer. It is extremely important that students learn the steps involved in protecting themselves from the sun's harmful rays.

The SunWise with SHADE 2009 Poster Contest does just that! Students get to be creative while they learn the Sun safety steps. Oh yeah, the contest is FREE, and they can win great prizes. You'll receive a free SunWise Toolkit for your classroom when you register.
