Zion is an ancient Hebrew word meaning a place of refuge or sanctuary. This shot is looking toward Zion Canyon, with some of the largest sandstone cliffs in the world seen in the background. Zion is located at the junction of the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and Mojave Desert, creating a variety of weather types and unusual biodiversity. Generally the climate is quite dry, but flash floods and heavy snow squalls can occur with little warning.
