Summer`s unofficial start kicks off this weekend with many Americans heading outdoors to enjoy a bit of relaxation and fun in the sun. Whether heading to the beach, lake, mountains or just outside to barbecue, remember to protect your skin from the sun.
The EPA`s SunWise Program and the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention have teamed up to designate the Friday before Memorial Day - - Don`t Fry Day. On this day, all Americans are reminded to protect their skin from the sun every day.
The Center for Disease Control says skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the U.S. The American Cancer Society warns that one American dies every hour from the disease. More than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in more than 2.2 million people per year. Fortunately, it is highly curable, if detected early. Detecting skin cancer is easy, just examine your skin regularly and go see your doctor if you see changes in moles and skin growth.
Preventing skin cancer is easy if you remember to Slip! Slop! Slap! And Wrap - - slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses. Try to limit outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest and when outside during the day, seek shade as frequently as possible.
