Fort McMurray’s Beacon Hill neighborhood was filled with debris and rubble on Thursday, May 5, after a 210,000 acre (85,000-hectare) wildfire, which began a day earlier, scorched the area. The Alberta government announced the banning of fire and incendiary targets across the province to reduce the risks of more blazes as the hot and dry weather persisted. Authorities evacuated the entire population of Fort McMurray as the fire torched homes and buildings.
Fort McMurray is known for its massive oil sands deposits and is surrounded by wilderness.
