Tropical Storm Hanna continues to lose its tropical characteristics as it moves out of New England this morning.
At 5 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Hanna was centered at 42.6 N and 70.0 W or about 60 miles north of Chataham, Mass. Hanna is moving to the northeast at 36 mph. Maximum sustained winds are at 50 mph. Hanna`s minimum central pressure is still at 995 mb or 29.38 inches of mercury.
Tropical Storm Hanna made land fall near the North Carolina/ South Carolina border at 3:40 a.m. EDT Saturday morning. From there Hanna quickly tracked up the East Coast, bringing heavy rain, flooding and power outages. Rainfall totals were generally in the range of 4 to 7 inches across the Mid-Atlantic and New England. Here is a look, state-by-state, of some of the problems caused by Hanna.
South Carolina
- Flooding and storm surge is reported. Highway 17 in Georgetown, S.C., was closed early Saturday due to heavy rain and storm surge.
North Carolina
- Wind gust of 72 mph reported at Wrightsville Beach. Storm surge early Saturday reaches dune line.
- Flooding reported on the North Carolina State Campus early Saturday.
- Roads in Fayetteville, N.C., were impassable due to high water early Saturday. Rainfall totals exceeded 4 inches in many areas of eastern North Carolina.
- Highest rainfall total (6.69 inches) in the state from Hanna was reported at Pope Air Force Base.
- 18 inches of water reported on Highway 12 on Pea Island.
Virginia
- About 25,000 people were without power in the Washington, D.C. metro area and Virginia.
- Some Washington Metro subway service in northern Virginia has been cut due to track malfunction and flooding.
- Thirty Huntington homes were evacuated due to flooding. Fairfax County Police went door-to-door, ordering the evacuation.
- Three people were killed in car accidents related to Tropical Storm Hanna across the state.
- WeatherBug Live Tracking Stations in Oakton reported nearly 9 inches of rain, while Fairfax and Annandale reported more than 7 inches of rain Saturday.
- Water rescues reported near Herndon and Dale City.
- Roads closed due to flash flooding in and around Mecklenburg.
- Interstate 95 was closed this morning near Richmond when power lines fell on the road.
- Trees reported down on Virginia side of Washington Beltway near Dulles Toll Road.
- 3 feet of water over Route 1 in Dale City.
Maryland
- 54 mph wind gust reported near Annapolis late Saturday morning.
- 5 inches of rain reported in Nanjemoy.
- Tree down on Interstate 270 in Rockville.
- Trees down in Columbia. At least one tree is on car.
- All gates at Quantico closed due to flooding.
- One person was killed in an car accident related to Tropical Storm Hanna on Interstate 95 in Prince George`s County.
Pennsylvania
- More than 3 inches of rain reported at Live WeatherBug tracking stations in south-central Pennsylvania. Highest total is 4.75 inches at Hanover.
- A tornado conformed in East Allentown. The tornado was on the ground for approximately 2 miles, damaged 50 properties, damaged or destroyed about 100 trees, and was rated an EF-1.
New Jersey
- Peak wind gust of 51 mph reported in North Wildwood.
New York
- Daily rainfall records set at Islip and LaGuardia airports.
- Wires down due to wind reported in Yonkers.
- Phillies-Mets game at Shea Stadium postponed. Day-night double-header scheduled for Sunday.
- U.S. Open Tennis was washed out Saturday. All Saturday matches are scheduled for Sunday.
Connecticut
- A WeatherBug Live Tracking Stations at Whisconier Middle School received 7.15 inches of rain.
- Another WeatherBug Live Tracking Station at New Fairfield High School collected 6.49 inches of rain, while East Hartford, Conn., had 6.19 inches of rain.
- A washout on Sumer Street in Stafford created a sink hole.
- About 5,700 residents without power.
- A possible tornado was reported near Danbury.
Rhode Island
- More than 3 inches of rain reported in Providence and Coventry.
Massachusetts
- More than 3 inches of rain reported in Taunton and Duxbury.
- One hundred feet of road collapsed in Milford.
- Winds gusted to 30 mph on Martha`s Vineyard
Maine
- A record rainfall of 1.27 inches was set in Bangor on Saturday.
