GONAIVES, Haiti - Authorities in Haiti say the death toll from Tropical Storm Hanna now stands at 161 in the impoverished Caribbean country.
The Civil Protection Department reports that flooding is responsible for most of the deaths.
Department spokesman Abel Nazaire says 21 of the deaths were in Gonaives. That northern city has been almost entirely cut off by floodwaters from the storm.
Lakes have formed over every road in Gonaives and officials are rushing food and other supplies to residents who were stranded by floodwaters.
Hanna was skirting the Bahamas on Thursday. It is also blamed for one death in Puerto Rico.
