Ike A Tropical Depression As It Rockets Northeast

Ike is losing its wind strength as it pushes through the southern Plains. It has now weakened to a tropical depression. Even so, flooding rain, damaging winds and tornadoes will remain Ike`s calling card even as it continues to weaken.

WeatherBug Meteorologist Steve Prinzivalli has the latest on Ike`s path in this exclusive WeatherBug Tropical Weather Outlook.

Storm surge in excess of 12 feet occurred along the Southwest Louisiana and eastern Texas Gulf Coast, including on Galveston Island. This surge will take time to gradually lower tonight, so widespread flooding will continue through the morning. Houston and the rest of eastern Texas continues to see significant flooding from its pelting downpours. Rainfall totals are approaching 10 inches in southeastern Texas.

WeatherBug meteorologists will be watching development over the next several hours and will make frequent updates.

As of 4 a.m. CDT, Tropical Depression Ike is centered near 36.4 N, 92.5 W. The storm`s center is about 75 miles southeast of Springfield, Mo.

Ike is rocketing to the northeast at 30 mph. Additional acceleration is expected tonight, bringing the storm through the central Plains.

Maximum sustained winds are 35 mph, which makes Ike a tropical depression. Its minimum pressure is now at 29.12 inches or 986 mb. Winds will continue to decrease as it pushes further inland.
