Gustav, now a rain-soaked tropical depression, will continue to spread heavy downpours into the Mississippi Valley and Midwest today. The almost-three day deluge has finally ended across much of Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Rachel Peterson has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug video.
A couple inches of rain is likely again today from Gustav`s remnants, with the highest of the rainfall totals likely from Missouri through western Illinois. A few places, especially around the southern Lake Michigan shoreline and including Chicago and Gary, Ind., could see more than 3 inches today.
On Wednesday, a Live WeatherBug Tracking station in Metcalfe, Miss., recorded over 7 inches of rain on Wednesday, with many tracking stations in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi recording 3 to 7 inches of rain on Wednesday.
This much rain in such a short period of time is triggering flash flooding, overwhelming creeks and streams, and cause roads to turn into raging rivers. Do not attempt to drive through flood waters, as they may be moving faster and be higher than they appear. Remember: Turn Around, Don`t Drown!
Cities in the flood danger area include Quincy, Ill., Moline, Ill., Springfield, Ill., St. Louis, Mo., Jefferson City, Mo., and Farmington, Mo.
Another significant threat being produced by Gustav is strong to severe thunderstorms, often producing tornadoes. Severe storms can be expected later this afternoon from southwestern Missouri through central Illinois, western Indiana and western Kentucky today. Cities that can expect this severe weather include: St. Louis, Mo., Springfield, Mo., Mount Vernon, Ill., Terre Haute, Ind., and Paducah, Ky.
The same system produced eight unconfirmed tornadoes across the lower Mississippi valley Wednesday, including one that roared through Crowley, La., before lunch. On Tuesday, twisters rolled through central Mississippi and eastern Louisiana, knocking down trees. One storm in Westwego, La., destroyed a multi-story apartment complex and a car wash.
