Tropical Storm Hanna Exiting New England

Tropical Storm Hanna continues to lose its tropical characteristics as it moves out of New England this morning.

As of 5 a.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Hanna is centered at 42.6 N and 70.0 W or about 60 miles north of Chataham, Mass. Hanna is moving to the northeast at 36 mph. Maximum sustained winds are at 50 mph. Hanna`s minimum central pressure is still at 995 mb or 29.38 inches of mercury. This is the last advisory to be issued on Hanna.

Wind gusts along the coast have been rather impressive with Hanna. Wrightsville Beach, N.C., had a 72 mph wind gust just after 5 a.m. on Saturday. Virginia Beach, Va., had winds gust to 64 mph. The storm late Saturday night produced a wind gust to 41 mph at Otis Air National Base in Forestdale, Mass., and a 40 mph wind gust at Nantucket Memorial Airport in Nantucket, Mass.

The rain from Hanna is now exiting central and northern Maine this morning.

Hanna has already produced some impressive rainfall totals in the Caribbean, leading to significant flooding across the Bahamas, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The official death toll in Haiti from Hanna climbed to 529 Saturday.

Another threat from Hanna is dangerous swells and rip currents it is sending toward the New England coastline. Tropical Storm Hanna is a very large storm, and even if you are well away from the storm`s center, these currents can be very strong and could potentially pull you away from the shore.
