Hurricane Cristobal will gallop across the North Atlantic through this weekend, only posing a threat to shipping lanes and beach-goers north of the Mid-Atlantic for summer`s unofficial end.

As of 5 a.m. AST, Hurricane Cristobal was located near 42.1 N and 51.7 W, or 325 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada. This also places Cristobal about 955 miles east of Cape Cod, Mass. Cristobal`s top sustained winds have decreased to 80 mph, making it a Category One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. It is rocketing east-northeast at 49 mph, and its minimum central pressure has risen to 973 mb, or 28.74 inches of mercury.

While Cristobal won`t be a threat to land as it rapidly accelerates across the North Atlantic for the next few days, it will generate large swells and extremely dangerous rip currents from Mid-Atlantic into New England beaches as well as across the southern coast of Nova Scotia.

Cristobal will track into cooler water and will merge with a weak low pressure system departing Newfoundland and Nova Scotia today. It will be these factors that turn Cristobal into an extra-tropical cyclone by the end of Labor Day weekend.
