Tropical Storm Karen Reviewed

October 8, 2013

By WeatherBug's Luke Paris

Tropical Storm Karen posed a serious threat to the Gulf Coast on its initial formation, but stalled and weakened quickly before making landfall.

Hurricane and tropical storm watches were issued with urgency in the morning hours of October 3 as Tropical Storm Karen formed in the Gulf of Mexico. With conditions prime for strengthening, Karen was expected to slam into locations along the Gulf Coast. Karen sustained 65 mph winds through early morning on October 4.

Later on October 4, Tropical Storm Karen became disorganized as it shifted northward and by nightfall the same day, the hurricane watches were discontinued and Karen kept weakening, but remained a tropical storm. Karen stalled for most of the day on October 5, and finally weakened to a depression at 11 p.m. EDT. By 11 a.m. EDT on October 6, Karen had become a remnant low without officially making landfall. The remnants of Karen brought moderate rainfall of 1 to 3 inches to locations in the Central Gulf in the following days.
