Tropical Storm Jerry Reviewed

October 8, 2013

By WeatherBug's Luke Paris

Tropical Storm Jerry created quite the ruckus out in the deep Atlantic Ocean waters in the last week of September and early October, regardless of its short life span.

Tropical Depression Eleven formed on September 28, out in the Central Atlantic. It began moving northeastward as it strengthened slightly to Tropical Storm Jerry, with maximum sustained winds clocking in at a whooshing 45 mph. Stirring up waters, Jerry remained stationary for nearly all of October 1, and began its journey northeastward once again on October 2.

As Jerry reached cooler waters and deep convection ceased, it was downgraded to a tropical depression. By 6 p.m. EDT on October 3, Jerry had lost all convection needed to be classified as a tropical cyclone and was designated as a remnant low.

In 1989, Hurricane Jerry made landfall in southern Texas, causing more than 70 million dollars in damage and directly caused three deaths. It was noted for its unexpected nature, with hurricane warnings issued only eight hours before landfall occurred. More than 6 inches of rain was recorded at locations in Texas as Jerry made landfall and power outages were widespread for many customers.
