Tropical Storm Dorian Reviewed

August 5, 2013

By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Andrew Rosenthal

Although Tropical Storm Dorian made few headlines, it was able to remain in the tropical attention for quite a long time.

Dorian formed on July 24 as the season`s fourth tropical depression, about 300 miles west-southwest of the Cape Verde Islands. It was quickly upgraded to a tropical storm as it crossed the relatively warm east-central Atlantic. Dorian then continued tracking westward across the Atlantic, although it ran into strong wind shear, finally ripping the storm apart on July 27.

However, Dorian wasn`t ready to leave the news quite yet. Its remnants charted a path north of the Virgin Island, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola, with very little impact on any of these islands. After its remnants passed across the Bahamas, it then stalled out near the Florida coast on August 1 and 2, slowly turning to the north. This enhanced the typical summer sea-breeze, bringing rounds of heavy rain.

As the low-pressure remnant passed east of Melbourne, Fla., it became better organized, prompting the National Hurricane Center to consider it a tropical depression once again on August 3. However, this second-chance for Dorian was short-lived, as it lost its tropical characteristics that evening off the northern Florida coast.
