What is a Hurricane?

A hurricane becomes a hurricane when a tropical storm or tropical cyclone (an organized system of thunderstorms that forms over tropical waters) intensifies so that the minimum sustained winds are equal to or greater than 74 mph (64 knots). In the western Pacific, hurricanes are called typhoons and similar storms in the Indian Ocean are called cyclones.
