WeatherBug Wins CTIA E-Tech Award for LBS Severe Weather Alerting Service

WeatherBug Protect Takes Home Second Place in Public Safety Category

Germantown, Md. — WeatherBug, the leading provider of live, local weather information and services for consumer and professional users, announced today that its severe weather alerting service, WeatherBug Protect, has won second place in the Mobile Applications & Widgets— Healthcare/Public Safety/ Transportation/ Public Services category of the Emerging Technology (E-Tech) Awards, presented at the International CTIA Wireless 2009 show in Las Vegas.

WeatherBug Protect is the only location-based mobile alerting system to utilize the WeatherBug Network of nationwide weather sensors, providing customers with real-time, local alerts integrated with notifications from the National Weather Service. WeatherBug Protect proactively alert users when severe weather is occurring in their current GPS location. With WeatherBug Protect customers receive precise and relevant notification to help them respond to severe weather before it becomes a threat. Protect is the only mobile application that delivers weather alerts in real-time for the user’s current location, syncing between two very dynamic systems—the weather and the user’s GPS location. In addition, Protect is the first mobile application to utilize data collected from the proprietary WeatherBug Total Lightning Network that delivers real-time lightning warnings. Verizon Wireless recently launched WeatherBug Protect, available with a monthly subscription in its Get It Now® store.

"We are very proud to receive a CTIA E-Tech award in the public safety and services category," said Chris Brozenick, vice president and general manager of mobile, WeatherBug. "For consumers, government officials, teachers and other professionals who work or spend time outdoors, WeatherBug Protect provides them the added peace of mind of knowing they are receiving relevant weather information and the earliest warnings available."

The CTIA Emerging Technology Awards program is designed to give industry recognition and exposure to the best wireless products and services in the areas of mobile consumer electronics and applications; enterprise and vertical market technology; 4G and network infrastructure; and environmentally friendly hardware and services. Nearly 300 applications were submitted in 18 categories and reviewed by a panel of 30 recognized members of the media, industry analysts and executives. Products were judged on innovation, functionality, technological importance, implementation and overall 'wow' factor.
