WeatherBug® Records Strong Gains in Users as Hurricane Charley and
Tropical Storm Bonnie Make Landfall

More people turned to leading desktop weather service than any other online weather source

GAITHERSBURG, Md. - August 17, 2004-WeatherBug today said it recorded a surge of traffic, downloads and distributed severe weather alerts as Hurricane Charley and Tropical Storm Bonnie made landfall last week. WeatherBug provides live neighborhood weather information from 7,000 neighborhoods across the U.S. to broadcasters, federal and state government agencies, the National Weather Service, schools, consumers and businesses.

According to comScore Media Metrix, the WeatherBug desktop application recorded more than seven million daily active users* on Friday, August 13 - the peak of the storm. This surpasses weather.com's own internally reported figure (6.3 million unique users) by 11 percent.

During the two storms, WeatherBug:

  • Issued 1,321 hurricane alert warnings to millions of at home/at work users in Florida and the Carolinas via audible "chirps" and visual cues
  • Saw nearly a million (943,000) new users download, install and register the product
  • Recorded one of the storm's highest sustained wind gusts of 89.7 miles per hour, from its own tracking station in Cape Coral , Florida
  • Generated more than 100 in-bound links and 200 comments on its special real-time hurricane newsblog ( http://WeatherBug.blogs.com ) which was written by company meteorologist Ryan Towell (Ryan Towell covered the hurricane landfall in Florida , and company meteorologist Richard Reed covered the landfall in North Carolina )
  • Delivered streaming live data, alerts and images from its total of 313 weather stations in and around Florida and the Carolinas to broadcast partners such as WFTS in Tampa , WBBH/WZVN in Ft. Myers , WTVJ in Miami and WCSC in Charleston , South Carolina
  • Provided 45 hourly reports to the Westwood One Radio Network, owner of more than 1,000 radio stations

"WeatherBug is a 21 st century weather media company. We have truly redefined how severe weather events are covered both online and on air," said Bob Marshall, CEO and co-founder of WeatherBug.  "Our consumers and broadcasters depended on us to deliver live streaming local data and alerts, especially to help move people to safe ground. And we found new ways to bring this valuable information to our legions of users through initiatives like the WeatherBug weblog. We are proud to have helped inform the public and assisted in saving lives and protecting property."

WeatherBug, available free at www.WeatherBug.com, had more than 24 million unique visitors in July 2004, according to comScore Media Metrix, making it the leader in online weather.  Approximately 10% of these users (2.4 million), according to company records, live in and around areas affected by these two storms.
