Meteorological Field Service Representative in Southern California (Los Angeles or San Diego)
We are seeking a Meteorological Field Service Representative in Southern California (Los Angeles or San Diego). A successful candidate will have the qualifications below.
Position overview:
Entry level meteorological field services position working with local Education, Government and Media partners as well as third party contractors
Successful fulfillment of job requirements will lead to increased responsibilities and advancement opportunities within company`s fast growing weather information, network and forecasting operations
Responsibilities include being the first level "Boots on the Ground" customer/technical support for weather station installation and maintenance throughout assigned territory
Certify weather station locations by documenting, through written reports and photographs, site specific conditions which may include identifying and implementing improvements/upgrades that will result in optimal data recording
Build/strengthen relationships with customers to enhance company visibility and encourage dependence on products and information services – Face of WeatherBug for designated geographic area
Use meteorological education, experience and expertise to work with local media, education and government partners to emphasize importance and benefits of local weather data to all parties as well as the general public at large.
Position Responsibilities:
Perform field work 4-5 days per week visiting sensor host locations to maintain/improve weather station uptime and data quality, to perform scheduled maintenance on stations, to promptly resolve sudden station problems, and to install weather station and camera systems as needed
Develop and execute territory service plan according to strict timelines to ensure optimal network operations
Must be able to balance demands of both preventive maintenance and reactive site visits – requires proactive identification of needs and verification of enhancements via monitoring of station performance metrics
Ability to coordinate with third party vendors (additional labor and lift equipment) when augmentation is needed to complete multi-person tasks such as installation or re-siting of sensors
Specific on-site responsibilities include outdoor work such as traversing rooftops to replace faulty sensors, unclog rain gauges, increase sensor height, upgrade masts/mounting brackets, install guy wire, repair/replace cables and relocate sensors
On-site indoor work includes rebooting computers and installing Ethernet devices that transmit weather data via the internet, as well as finding safe, stable locations for long-term placement of equipment
Must possess knowledge of or desire to learn and apply computer hardware/software configuration and Internet communication skills in order to troubleshoot problems with weather station data transfer (check network operations via ping, trace, firewalls, etc.)
Requires a "can do" attitude and willingness to do "whatever it takes" to get the job done often under strict deadlines and harsh conditions
Position Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science or a 2 year technical degree with 3+ years experience as an installer of sensors, cables, masts, antennas, satellite dishes, network equipment, etc.
Some computer training and/or weather instrumentation experience desired
Experience working outdoors (or in other physically demanding job) preferred
Excellent organizational & retention skills - able to accurately and concisely report daily and weekly progress
Able to travel nationally on occasion to augment staff
Able to acquire a Level 2 security clearance
Able to rapidly analyze and troubleshoot issues using sound methodologies
Must be able to manage time efficiently to meet both client and company needs
Adept at translating technical concepts into "customer-friendly" language
Excellent verbal, written, and listening communications skills
Must learn & remain proficient on all supported products
Working knowledge of IBM PC compatibles – experience with Macintosh a plus
Must be able to troubleshoot computer issues, including software/hardware and modem/wireless devices
Proficient in Windows Operating Systems from 95 to XP
Basic understanding of firewalls, proxies, and networking
Experience with programming, database querying, and MS Office suite preferred
