For Consumer & Business Internet Users Who Download a Desktop Application to a Computer

  1. The right to receive clear, meaningful notice and the ability to affirmatively provide informed consent regarding whether or not to download and exactly when, with obvious, well-explained selection boxes or the equivalent whereby you can opt-in or opt-out, and the right to review and accept/reject an understandable, complete Privacy Policy and/or End-User License Agreement, or the equivalent.
  2. The right to rapidly and easily uninstall an unwanted application, inclusive of permanently disabling all undesired functionality while not impacting any other applications on your computer.
  3. The right to comprehend exactly what you are downloading, including the company behind it, the exact product name and version, an accurate description of the product’s true function and behavior, a date as to when the product was last revised, and its size in megabytes (if compressed, then also labeled with the size when uncompressed).
  4. The right to understand unmistakably what, if any, cost the download entails, initially or at any point forward, and any limitations or restrictions of use, including if the user will experience any form of advertising. Also, all advertisements are demonstrably inside or contained completely within the desktop application; there are no advertiser pop-ups or pop-unders (WeatherBug version 6.0 and higher has no advertiser pops).
  5. Also, the right to a download completely free of adware, which is software that has no other purpose but to serve ads based on behavioral or other user analytics.
  7. The right to know accurately what, if any, effect downloading and using the application might have regarding your system security, including the right to a download completely free of any viruses or other additional code or artifacts that could prove damaging to any part of your computer system.
  8. The right to be aware of precisely what effect the application will have on system resources, including storage, memory and other system applications, and network and/or Internet connectivity implications, in terms of duration, persistence, bandwidth required, and so on.
  9. For downloaded applications that come in multiples of two or more, the right to comprehensive information regarding what, if any, integration exists between or among the products, and what effect this has on system use, and an assurance that each and every application conforms to these rights best practices.
  10. The right to current and unambiguous information regarding the need for updates, how they can be obtained, the cost (if any), and the effect on system resources and use.
  11. The right to clearly opt-in or opt-out of email communications from the organization offering the software, and from any advertiser/sponsor communications.
